TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The most valuable part of being an educator is to witness the moment of transformation in a student. The teacher-student relationship is one of mutual growth that is achieved through learning from each other. Chan believes piano lessons not only benefit professional proficiencies, but also provide perspective on invaluable life lessons, such as commitment, responsibility, discipline, determination and dedication. Chan also believes that pedagogy, performance, and scholarship are related to each other, and her central goal as an educator is to tailor her teaching to students’ individual goals and needs. Within this, she consistently encourages her students to express and communicate their ideas, to create their music with imagination, and to develop their own voice based on their understanding of the literature and theory. Alongside this focus she place on students’ individual goals, She helps them develop their strengths and enable them to reach out to audiences in different settings, including traditional performance classes, concert halls and into their own communities.
